Movie:Sherlock Holmes
Being a mystery fan, I pretty much cut my teeth on Sherlock Holmes stories. I think I've read every one except those thrown in the trash by the author.
The latest movie rendition of my favorite sleuth depicts him as an undignified lout. That wouldn't have been so alarming if the story had been interesting. Instead it was pretty much the same old thing;evil duke (Adolph Hitler, hint, hint) plans to take over the world but gets foiled by the hero. It's full of fisticuffs, an unlikely romance with Irene Adler, an unlikelier bromance with Dr. Watson, and lots of things blowing up, from which everyone miraculously and nearly instantaneously recovers.
I missed the cold, sneering, brilliant psychopath of the written word. Without him, this was just another shoot 'em up Western. It was okay, but not a classic. Sadly, there will be a sequel.
An old spoof was far more entertaining.
